During challenging times, music has always been my anchor and it's a big part of why I keep creating, curating and sharing these monthly mixes for all of you. I love how these 11 songs flow together, and I hope they bring you the same sense of peace they bring me. Head to the Bandcamp playlist first and then the accompanying playlist versions (Tidal, Amazon Music + Spotify) which feature the occasional songs not available on BC. I encourage you to seek out and support the artists whose work resonates with you, even a single song purchase goes a long way. For paid subscribers, I'm going to share my first exclusive marine eyes material later this month—thank you for being here!
This month’s mix features—
Jun Futamata— Jun is a celebrated Japanese vocalist known for her ethereal voice and emotional depth, and for her debut to the mix series I decided to choose an earlier song of hers—recorded at Sigur Ros’ studio in Iceland back in 2023.
Laurie Torres + Nailah Hunter— As a huge fan of both Laurie and Nailah, this was a total joy to see the two of them collaborating and Correspondances II has already been on repeat since its release last week. Check out Laurie’s cloud collecting interview if you have yet to, and Nailah’s song on the compilation Healing Together which I curated in 2022.
Yara Asmar— Yara is a musician and puppeteer currently living in Beirut with her two cats, Mushroom and Fejlé. I am happy to have discovered her hauntingly beautiful and nostalgic music this past month.
frogi— frogi is an artist, writer, and producer originally from a small town outside of Chicago, now based in Los Angeles. I shared her another one of her projects IRYS BLÜM a few months back and love the ethereal, peaceful production of her ambient music.
Trees Can Talk— Trees Can Talk is the solo ambient project of British Columbia–based artist Rebecca Vaughan. Classically trained on multiple instruments and a former drummer and bassist in punk bands, she now creates electronica, ambient, and downtempo music as a form of personal therapy. I’ve been a fan of her work for awhile now, and her EP The Shape of Anomaly is an absolute gem—a collection meant to be experienced from start to finish.
Austin Ray— Happy to welcome Austin Ray to the mix series, a New York–based composer who is active with music for TV and film. Her music is intimate, cinematic, and beautifully textured.
Yetsuby— Yetsuby is a force in the electronic scene. Based in Korea, she is also a member of the band Salamanda. Her newly released track We Chant was released via the first gravity pleasure benefit compilation, a new FLINTA-focused label and event series run by Slowfoam and slyn— transmitting from the intersection of hydrofeminism, queer ecology and sound. The label centers artists' voices and aims to amplify diversity in the music scene.
Briana Marela— I had to feature a song from My Inner Rest, a live-in-concert recording from Mills College—where Briana layers her voice with synths, vocal sampling, and live processing to explore self-compassion and artistic rebirth. In case you missed Briana’s cloud collecting interview last month, be sure to check it out.
Karen Vogt + Jolanda Moletta— These two creative powerhouses recently released their new album Sea-swallowed Wands via the always-reliable UK label quiet details. Together, both artists lean into expressive vocal-based ambient and create an intimate sound through spontaneous collaboration. Read their cloud collecting interview here to dive deeper into their creative process.
Emelie Odelberg— Emelie Odelberg is a synthesist based in Gothenburg, Sweden. Originally trained in piano and church organ, she then switched to modular synthesis and hardware. She just released her new EP, Liminal a month ago and it’s often melodic nature makes me bop my head in ways only modular synths can.
Sarah Pagé— Sarah Pagé is a Montreal-based cellist known for her rich, expressive sound. Her playing brings this sense of warmth and I am in love with this latest solo work of hers.
marine eyes updates
My new project Almost An Island, with my husband James and friend Kenneth James Gibson (who you may know from the band Bell Gardens that he was in with the late, great Brian McBride from Stars of the Lid) has our debut up for pre-order via Past Inside the Present’s Bandcamp. The first tastes of the record, What Got Us To Our Feet + Wide Open (In Two Parts) are available to stream on Bandcamp + all streaming platforms too. We’ll be releasing another single this coming week—one of my personal favorites—and the full album drops July 30th, with a Bandcamp listening party that same day.
For those of you who are LA-based, I will be taking women of ambient on the road and performing a DJ gig at 2220 arts on August 9th alongside the amazing lineup of Green-House, Saapato + Ki Oni! It is bound to be a special night. You can get tickets here.
This is such a beautiful compilation—thank you so much for including me in it, and I’ve really enjoyed exploring everyone’s work!
Lovely list! Thanks for including qd35 Jolanda Moletta and Karen Vogt 🙏💙
